Amplify the voices of the next generation
As a brand built on the amplification of audio we wanted to turn up the volume on powerful messages from emerging artists and athletes.

PA SALIEU
British-Gambian rapper from Coventry. His debut mixtape “Send Them To Coventry” is named after the saying for deliberately ostracizing or marginalizing someone. Ultimately he wants to be the voice for those who couldn’t make it out saying, “I am the voice of the voiceless and our voices count” in a recent interview with the BBC after winning its prestigious title of BBC Music’s Sound of 2021.
He speaks to the influence of his community and the experiences they share.

Joy Crookes
British neo soul singer-songwriter of Bangladeshi-Irish heritage. She pines for unity and is out spoken about representation for South East Asian women in creative industries. Making a statement at last years BRIT Awards, she wore a yellow lehenga to represent British South Asian people who are so often excluded from those ceremonies.
She speaks of representation and celebrating diversity.

SERGE GNABRY
German-Ivorian profession footballer that plays for Bayern Munich and the German national team. He was a young phenom that burst on to the scene signing with Arsenal at 16, but after struggling for multiple season was nearly considered a bust until joining Bayern and rediscovering his confidence. He is proud of his Ivorian roots and feels as though he is always living between two worlds. Failure and champion. German and African.
He speaks of his dualities and how they push him on and off the pitch.

As a Refuge, Muslim, Queer woman, turned standout rapper in her adopted home of Germany, she raps and uses her popularity to draw attention to her community and the injustices they often face.
She always speaks up for her community and pushes to make Germany more open.

DISNEY
We all start somewhere. For Beats it was in the studio. And for Disney, it was all started by a mouse. The undeniable link between the two is music. Both Beats and Disney use this universal language to inspire people around the world to keep dreaming and keep the magic alive. To celebrate the Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday as the “True Original” we used Walt Disney’s saying, “it was all started by a mouse” as our springboard. We then found an original artist-Maripol-working in her original medium to tell the origin stories of 4 artist’s careers. It took us all around the world-from the stages of London to the streets of Harajuku.

To showcase the product we created a video that reflected Mickey’s storied heritage with music.
For the iconic Japanese streetwear duo Amiyaya, it was all started by “the streets” of Haarajuku where they were discovered for their style via street fashion snapshots.
Chinese movie star, Dongyu Zhou knew from an early age that she wanted to be on the screen. She would often go to her grandmother’s home and watch movies and act them out for her. From those humble beginnings she rose to instant fame with her debut film resulting in several awards. For her it simply was all started by “the movies.”
No one was better suited to capture these authentic, unrepeatable moments than “The Original Selfie Queen,” Maripol. She owns this medium. She is the Polaroid master. Here she takes us back to where it was all started, New York City.

A collaboration that celebrates unique style and individuality. Beats X have been reimagined to let listeners incorporate their own creativity and identity. Featured is artist, songwriter and audio engineer Syd who embodies the hybrid mindset and lends us the perfect track for this piece, “Come Together” from her neo-soul band The Internet.

This special edition was inspired by Balmain Creative Director Olivier Rousteing’s vision for an urban safari which he describes as “a beautiful, diverse escape that can only be accessed by the emotion of music”. To bring that concept to life we enlisted Balmain Army member Kylie Jenner to be the face of the collection appearing in otherworldly jungle and desert settings.

With the launch of Kris Wu’s limited edition headphone in China we wanted to create a story around the brush stroke design that wraps around the product. To us, the brush strokes became badges of honor-symbols for all of life’s experiences and the marks they leave behind. Fusing the visual dynamism of classic comics and manga with elements of traditional printmaking, we created a unique animated world that reflects Kris' global style and influence. Dark inks anchor grungy halftone patterns and energetic slashes of red to form the universe of our heroes' epic adventure.

When Beats teamed up with LINE FRIENDS (billed as Asia's no. 1 character brand) to present a special-edition version of Beats' popular Solo3 Wireless on-ear headphones, we decided to show a new side of their lovable character, Brown. From the moment he puts on his Beats, he’s transformed. His Beats give him the power to reveal the real superstar in his heart. There’s a new Brown in town.

BAD ISLAND
The man behind Radiohead’s iconic album art provided us with a glimpse into the process of his completely hand Lino-carved graphic novel “Bad Island”. The book tackles environmental themes in a cautionary tale-presenting the follies of humankind as they devastate nature and upset its delicate balance until it reaches a point of no return. Using this iconic graphic imagery we created a handful of very limited products and celebrated the release of the book at the Beats Residency in London.

SHEPARD FAIREY
FACING THE GIANT
With his storied background in street art, Shepard Fairey knows that art is the way to speak his mind. The “Facing the Giant” exhibition references his early Obey Giant work, but, more enduringly, the giant issues and forces he still confronts in his art today-30 years down the line. Beats co-curated his London solo exhibition with Stolen Space gallery in our very own Beats Residency. We also witnessed Shepard paint a mural that engulfs the building’s facade; using a pattern from that mural we created an assortment of limited edition products.

DEFER
LAYERS OF A CITY
When NBA All-Star weekend took place in Los Angeles we wanted to honor the different subcultures of the city. We worked with legendary LA graffiti artist Defer to develop a “Roll Call” pattern of different Los Angeles neighborhoods to create a custom headphone for each participating player. In our short film he shares his process, the role LA played in his artistic evolution, and how music fuels his art. To continue highlighting the rich creative talent that the city has to offer we reached out to the LA’s very own Estevan Oriol to help us tell Defer’s story.

#MERKY BOOKS POP-UP
We teamed up with Grime superstar, Stormzy‘s publishing imprint #Merky Books for a three-day POP-UP in celebration of the written word at the Beats Residency in Shoreditch, London.
The pop-up showcased all aspects of creativity through workshops, live performances, podcasts, and panels discussions on music, art, culture, spoken word, songwriting, playwriting, and filmmaking.
#Merky Books prides itself on introducing a generation of new voices into the art world while publishing the best new fiction, non-fiction and poetry. As a result, the pop-up sold books written by authors of color, self-produced zines and illustrative prints by up and coming artists. Additionally throughout the activation, visitors were able to listen to audiobooks at Beats listening stations.

Surrounded by the symbolism of spring and new life blossoming all around, Shinseikatsu season is the time of year that inspires new beginnings.
The multi-talented Japanese pop idol, Becky, had everything. There was a time when you could barely go a single day without seeing her on TV, but in 2016 her reputation as Japan's most popular female personality came crashing down after it was revealed that she had an affair with musician Enon Kawatani who was married at the time. In order to appease the public backlash and as a condition for her comeback to show business in Japan, Becky officially apologized to Kawatani's wife. Becky’s fall from grace following the affair ignited debate over Japan’s unfair standards for women in the entertainment industry.
As the star of the campaign, she is seen taking back the control of her life and her story. She sheds the negativity of the past and catapults back into the spotlight, opening a new chapter and doing it her way.

Studio is a typeface designed for Shepard Fairey. He went on to use it for his graphic design studio’s logo and exterior signage, as well as Swindle Magazine’s masthead.
A logo was also designed that has been used by the studio ever since.
GRAPHIC DESIGN
HURLEY PRINTING PRESS
What started as a working printing press and creative playground for the Art Department on the Hurley campus became an enduring part of the brand’s aesthetic.
Working closely with skateboard icon Craig Stecyk III, we extended the DIY spirit beyond the walls of Hurley and gave customers a chance to get their hands dirty with pop up Printing Presses at surf competitions across the globe.
Ultimately, the initiative permeated all visual aspects of the brand, becoming its retail and design expressions.

LEVIS X MOCA
ART IN THE STREETS
With help from 10 renowned artists and subjects in the Art in the Streets exhibit at the MOCA, Los Angeles, the iconic Levi's Trucker Jacket became a canvas for some extraordinary original artworks. Each jacket came in special MOCA x Levi's packaging complete with an artist print, and was released chronologically in accordance with the artist’s beginning. The designs were limited to 50 units only, with exclusive availability at Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. All proceeds from sales went to the charitable community causes headed by MOCA.

When Hyatt launched their latest brand Caption by Hyatt their aim was to redefine what hospitality looks like in the modern world. With a desire to attract both locals and visitors alike to use its social spaces, they designed the hotel to facilitate connection with one another and to discover local places around them. They knew they wanted an identity and visual language that felt like it had a soul.
Taking ink brush to paper I set out to develop an eclectic array of illustrations, iconography, patterns, custom type, and colour combinations that would make their properties stand out.
